Research and papers

My first publications were on the epidemiology of meningitis in southern Africa and TB and HIV.

After I moved to Bradford I pursued clinical epidemiological research in quality improvement and patient safety before moving to life course epidemiology and then health services research and implementation science.

I am the Director of the Yorkshire and Humber Applied Research Collaboration that works across the region to tackle inequalities in health and improve the physical health and well-being of communities and the Chief Investigator for the Born in Bradford (BiB) study and the Connected Bradford programme that has safely and securely linked data from across the NHS, local government, urgent care, education and environmental sources to build a rich source of intelligence.

I hold honorary academic posts as a Visiting Professor in Clinical Epidemiology at the Universities of Bradford, York and Leeds and have authored three text books and over 500 papers and been awarded over £160 million in research award funding, £60 million as chief investigator.
